VMKernel adapter is created on a host that is associated with a distributed switch to provide network connectivity to the host and to handle the traffic for vMotion, IP Storage (iSCSI, NAS), Fault Tolerance logging, vSAN, and others.
Following points should be considered when creating a VMKernel adapter on a host that is associated with the distributed switch.
• Single distributed portgroup should be dedicated per VMKernel adapter.
• For better isolation, one VMKernel adapter should be configured with one traffic type.
Let’s start the process:
Step 1: Login to vSphere Web Client using your credentials.
Step 2: Click on your Host > Manage > Networking > VMKernel Adapters > Add host networking.
Step 3: Select VMKernel Network Adapter and click Next.
Step 4: Choose Select an existing network and click Next.
Step 5: Choose TCP/IP stack of your choice or leave it default, and you can also choose Enable services and click Next.
Step 6: Choose IPv4 settings as per your environment. Enter IP address and Subnet mask if you chose static IPv4 settings and click Next.
Step 7: Verify your settings and click Finish
Step 8: VMKernel adapter is created. Same way, VMKernel adapters can be created according to requirements.
