VMware, Inc. is an American company headquartered in Palo Alto, California founded in 1998 and became subsidiary of EMC Corporation in 2004. It provides cloud and virtualization software and services, and claims to be the first to successfully virtualize the x86 architecture commercially. VMware is a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility and generates $6.6 billion in 2015. Company has more than 500,000 customers, more than 75,000 partners, and 19,000+ employees in 120+ countries around the globe.
VMware Certification Roadmap Overview
VMware offers certifications in four major areas which are cloud management and automation, data center virtualization, network virtualization, and desktop and mobility. This certification guide will help you become certified with VMware’s certifications and advance in your professional career.
Being a leader in the virtualization world, VMware certification(s) have become pre-requisite for IT professionals, who are interested in managing SMBs to Enterprise data centers and/or support virtual environments. VMware stared its major certification program in 2013, restructuring for better organization and refreshing certifications to match new technologies. They’ve continued to roll out new certifications ever since.
The latest release for VMware products is Version 6 or 6.2 in some cases. Certifications for VMware vSphere 5/5.5 are still valid and can also be upgraded while registering for beta exam for Version 6. In this blog, we’ll explain the requirements and key features for Version 6 or above for all four major areas of VMware’s certifications.
VMware Version 6 certifications’ four categories are:
- Data Center Virtualization
- Cloud Management and Automation
- Network Virtualization
- Desktop and Mobility
Each category has Associate, Professional, Advanced, and Expert level, such as:
- VMware Certified Associate (VCA)
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)
- VMware Certified Implementation Expert (VCIX)
- VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX)*
*Design Expert (e-g VCDX6-DCV) level certifications are not yet available.

Associate certifications of every solution track typically require to pass a single exam to earn certification. In Professional and Advanced Professional certifications, a candidate must either take a training course or earn a prerequisite certification and pass an exam (a few certifications require two exams). Two Advanced Professional credentials are offered: Deploy and Design. To obtain the VCIX, candidates must earn both the VCAP Deploy and Design credentials.
VMware implemented a recertification policy in March 2014 for professional-level certifications, and also making VCP credentials valid for two years. More information can be found on VMware certifications at: http://mylearn.vmware.com/portals/certification/
VMware Data Center Virtualization (DCV) Certifications
VMware’s Data Center Virtualization certifications require skills and hand-on experience on vSphere 6 (VCP5-DCV still valid and can be upgraded to VCP6-DCV by passing VCP6-DCV Delta exam (Exam Number: 2V0-621D) with recommended training – vSphere: What’s New [V5.5 to V6]).
The VMware Certified Associate 6 – Data Center Virtualization (VCA6-DCV) is an entry-level certification for individuals familiar with vSphere and other VMware solutions and technologies. To earn VCA6-DCV, candidates need to pass the VMware Certified Associate 6 – Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals exam (1V0-601).
The VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6-DCV) is a very popular certification for the candidates who have at least six months’ hands-on experience with VMware infrastructure and technologies. A VCP6-DCV is capable of installing, implementing and managing VMware vSphere environments. Candidates who are new to VMware will have to pass two exams, the vSphere 6 Foundations Exam (2V0-620) and the VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Exam (2V0-621). Additional prerequisites may apply to candidates with vSphere 5.x training or seeking to upgrade.
To earn advanced professional certification in vSphere environment, you’ll have to pass two Advanced Professional certifications in the Data Center Virtualization category:
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Deployment (VCAP6-DCV Deploy) — for candidates with more than two years of experience of administering and managing VMware virtual environment and who already passed any VCP6-DCV certification.
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Design (VCAP6-DCV Design) – for individuals who work with vSphere 6 technologies in a virtual data center possess any VCP6 level certification.
The next step in the Data Center Virtualization destiny is the VMware Certified Implementation Expert 6 – Data Center Virtualization (VCIX6-DCV). This certification is geared to IT professionals who can design and deploy enterprise virtual infrastructure solutions. To earn VCIX6-DCV, candidates must have both the VCAP6-DCV Design and VCAP6-DCV Deploy certifications.
VMware Cloud Management and Automation (CMA) Certifications
In this certification field, there are six VMware Cloud Management and Automation (CMA) certifications available. CMA certifications identify a candidate’s skills working with the vCloud Suite (including vRealize) along with general and advanced cloud computing knowledge and expertise.
In entry level certification of CMA, there are two VCA6 certs available under this category:
- VCA6-Cloud Management and Automation (VCA6-CMA) — for candidates who aware of vCloud Suite products and technologies, along with technical requirements for cloud infrastructure virtualization.
- VCA6-Hybrid Cloud (VCA6-HC) — targets IT professionals working with vCloud Air, hybrid cloud platforms and related technologies.
VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Cloud Management and Automation (VCP6-CMA): This credential models for candidates who have working experience with vRealize Automation implementations for more than six months. If you are new to vRealize, you must take a mandatory training course and pass the vSphere 6 Foundations Exam (2V0-620) and the VMware certified Professional 6 – Cloud Management and Automation Exam (2V0-631). If you already hold a VCP certification for any unexpired solution track, you can simply take the VCP6-CMA exam. The VCP6-CMA certification is automatically granted to individuals who already passed the VCP6-Cloud credential.
Now, coming on to VCAP certification in CMA track, there are two VCAP certifications available in this category:
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Cloud Management and Automation Design (VCAP6-CMA Design) — candidates must have to pass the VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Cloud Management and Automation Design Exam (3V0-632).
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Cloud Management and Automation Deployment (VCAP6-CMA Deployment) — candidates must pass the VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Cloud Management and Automation Deployment Exam (3V0-633).
Two years of hands-on experience is recommended for each certification, and both certifications require the VCP6-CMA as a prerequisite. Candidates who possess other VCP credentials or who are seeking to upgrade should check the certification Web page for current requirements.
The next step in the Cloud Management and Automation certification track is the VMware Certified Implementation Expert 6 – Cloud Management and Automation (VCIX6-CMA). This certification aims IT professionals capable of both designing and deploying enterprise level solutions using vRealize Automation. To qualify this certification, candidates must possess both the VCAP6-Design and VCAP6-Deployment certifications.
VMware Network Virtualization (NV) Certifications
The VMware Network Virtualization certification portfolio also known as Software-Defined Network (SDN) and consist of four credentials aims IT pros who can design, manage, and implement VMware NSX solutions.
VMware Certified Associate 6 – Network Virtualization (VCA6-NV): This entry level track is for candidates who know the cost and operational benefits of VMware NSX network virtualization and how it’s usage to address business challenges. There are no prerequisites and a free eLearning course is provided. Candidates must pass the VMware Certified Associate 6 – Network Virtualization Fundamentals Exam (1V0-604) exam to obtain the certification.
VMware Certified Professional 6 – Network Virtualization (VCP6-NV): This certification aims for professionals have more than six months’ hands-on experience for installing, managing, and configuring, the NSX environments. Candidates must attend a required training course plus pass two exams to earn the credential. The training course prerequisite is waived for candidates who possess a valid Cisco Routing and Switching (CCIE, CCNP, or CCNA) or Data Center (CCIE, CCNP, or CCNA) credential.
VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Network Virtualization Deployment (VCAP6-NV Deploy): Currently, there is only one advanced credential available in the Network Virtualization category. To acquire this certification, candidates must possess the VCP6-NV certification and pass the VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Network Virtualization Deployment exam. Two years’ experience in deploying VMware NSX environments is recommended along with general IT experience. Candidates who possess Cisco’s CCIE Data Center or CCIE Routing and Switching certifications need only take the exam to obtain the credential. A second advanced credential — VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Network Virtualization Design (VCAP6-NV Design) — is planned but not yet available.
VMware Certified Implementation Expert 6 – Network Virtualization (VCIX6-NV). To advance the professional career in Network Virtualization track, next step is VCIX6-NV. Normally, candidates are required to obtain both the VCAP6 Design and Deploy credentials to earn the VCIX6 certification title. However, VMware is waiving the VCAP6-NV Design requirement until that certification becomes available.
VMware Desktop and Mobility (DTM) Certifications
VMware’s Desktop and Mobility certifications (DTM) are designed for IT pros who are capable of deploying and managing mobile desktops and devices by using VMware Horizon with View environments. Following five credentials are available under this category.
VMware Certified Associate 6 – Desktop and Mobility (VCA6-DTM): This entry-level certification is designed for those IT pros who are working with mobile devices and desktops in virtual environments. Candidates can earn this certification by taking a free eLearning course as there are no pre-requisites.
VMware Certified Professional 6 – Desktop and Mobility (VCP6-DTM): Candidates working with vSphere 6 and Horizon 6 with View for more than two years of hands-on experience are eligible to earn this certification. To earn this credential, candidates must attend a training course plus pass two exams to earn this credential.
In advancement of VCP6-DTM, two advanced credentials are offered in the Desktop and Mobility category:
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Desktop and Mobility Design (VCA6-DTM Design) — targets IT professionals who design and integrate Horizon 6 environments.
- VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Desktop and Mobility Deployment (VCAP6-DTM Deploy) — geared towards individuals who deploy and optimize Horizon 6 environments.
Minimum two years of hands-on experience is required for each and VCP6-DTM as a pre-requisite for both certifications.
VMware Certified Implementation Expert 6 – Desktop and Mobility (VCIX6-DTM). This is the final and expert credential under Desktop and mobility track. Candidates who earn this expert level certification are able to both design and deploy solutions working with Horizon 6 with View. To obtain this title, candidates must earn both the VCAP6-DTM Design and VCAP6-DTM Deploy credentials.
VMware Training and Resources
Once you register with the VMware Education site, you have access to a wide variety of high-quality training resources. You can search for courses (online and classroom), browse the eLearning and Instructional Video libraries and more. Training courses can be expensive, though. For example, training courses for VCP6 range from $3,995 to $7,145 USD, depending on the delivery format. Some VCP6 On demand courses are also available and are less expensive as compare to classroom courses and valid for 45 days. These courses range from $820 to $1030 USD.
